High Value Carbon Materials from Pet Recycling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Polyethyleneterephthalate, PET, has become one of the major post-consumer plastic waste. In this work special attention was paid to minimising PET residues and to obtain a high value carbon material. Pyrolysis and subsequent activation of PET from post-consumer soft-drink bottles was performed. Activation was carried out at 925 oC under CO2 atmosphere to different burn-off degrees. Textural characterisation of the samples was carried out by performing N2 adsorption isotherms at –196 oC. The obtained carbons materials were mainly microporous, presenting low meso and macroporosity, and apparent BET surface areas of up to 2500 mg. The capacity of these materials for phenol adsorption and PAHs removal from aqueous solutions was measured and compared with that attained with commercial active carbons. Preliminary tests also showed high hydrogen uptake values, as good as the results obtained with high-tech carbon materials.

The rendering industry collects and safely processes approximately 25 million t of animal byproducts each year in the United States. Rendering plants process a variety of raw materials from food animal production, principally offal from slaughterhouses, but include whole animals that die on farms or in transit and other materials such as bone, feathers, and blood. By recycling these byproducts ...

The Plastic Waste phenomenon, which is the result of increasing poly (ethylene terephthalate) production and the wide range PET consumption in different industries, caused one of the major environmental concerns. Therefore, many different ways have been studied and applied for chemical recycling of PET. One of the most important ways to depolymerize poly (ethylene terephthalate) is the aminolysi...
